What Darwin didn’t Know Part 2

Nov. 3rd,2017

Last week we started talking about how in Darwin’s time they labeled everything outside of the nucleus as “protoplasm”. This week we will be taking a look inside of the nucleus with the same perspective that we now know so much more than what Darwin could have ever imagined.

Again we will be looking at how amazingly complex are the structures found within the nucleus of the cell. Particularly we will be looking at DNA.

From a single cell organism to any other cell found in any living thing, DNA is ultimately complex in its ability to act as a chemical language to direct and guide the construction of various proteins that are prerequisites for life to exist. DNA not only acts like a blueprint language for construction, it also has the ability to split and reproduce another copy of itself. It does this in a very complex ingenious way.

The discovery of the double helix where DNA genes reside was the work of Watson and Crick. Not long after this, there was the breakthrough of seeing that information was stored on the rungs of the DNA ladder in binary type language form. This language is complete with genetic letters for constructing the 20 different amino acids in proper sequence. This language also includes punctuation such as start and stop commands similar to our own language.

The possibility of DNA to somehow magically appear by chance alone is zero. We know that language is the product of design. The organizational structure of DNA language requires a designer in order to exist. Francis Collins, the director of the Human Genome project has titled a book called the Language of God. In this work, he explains how DNA has to be the product of intelligent design. He also chronicles his journey from Atheism to belief in God. “I realized that all of my own constructs against the plausibility of faith [in God] were those of a school boy. Clearly, I would need to start with a clean slate to consider this most important of all human questions.”

One interesting question that I would like to propose to any skeptics reading this post is How can DNA even open up to release the information needed for protein construction when the apparatus required for opening the structure are made up of proteins?

Looking at the diagram below, you will see a helicase, this mechanism unwinds the rails of DNA in a straight line. You will also see Single cell binding proteins which stabilize the opening process of the DNA strands. And finally, you will see the topoisomerase structure which acts like scissors to cut the beams of the double helix to release tension and then acts like a sort of glue to reattach the beams.

All of these structures are made up of proteins, the information for making all proteins is locked in a closed double helix. What the…? This conundrum appears unsolvable. It’s like a person who has fallen in a deep hole and is asking the question of how to get out? I know he says, I will go home and get a ladder, then I will be able to crawl out. Hmmm.

The most likely explanation is that both the proteins and the DNA had to be created at the same time by a sophisticated designer. The notion of these apparatus occurring by chance alone over a long period of time without God is preposterous.
