What about eternal life?

In last week’s post, we talked about how true meaning and purpose for life can ultimately only be found in being in right relationship with God. Therefore, what are some of the benefits to be found in being in this position?

Part of the benefit is that we become partakers and participants of the Kingdom of God. Jesus talks a lot about this kingdom, he often interchanges the words kingdom of God and kingdom of heaven. The reason that He does this is to help us understand that the future is bright and will certainly come to pass. The aspects of this kingdom that we are to enjoy include favor and blessing as well as the amazing aspect of eternal life in relationship with Jesus and all of the citizens of heaven.

We do not talk very often about the attribute of eternal life, but we should embrace it fully.

This is not something that is “just too good to be true.” We should not be embarrassed about this, like it is just some piece of folklore. Jesus has made this promise that just as he rose from the dead, so also we who believe in the salvation and lordship of Jesus shall rise also with a new spiritual body.

John 3:16 is a very familiar passage for many people. The very end of the verse says that we shall not perish, but have everlasting life.  Therefore, we are eternal beings actually right now. Jesus has given us the promise of the Holy Spirit as a deposit to confirm this to be true.

When Jesus is conversing with the Roman prefect Pontius Pilot, in John 18:36 he states, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”

Therefore, we see that this kingdom is both in the now and also in the future. Even though we are living in dark times, we are not daunted. Evil is still present in our world, but our future is in this kingdom that will someday reign with God’s authority gives us great comfort and peace. Philippians 4:7 states, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
