"Goo" Man

Goo Man?

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Gen. 1:26 (ESV)

One of the main points that we talked about at the Strong and Courageous conference was the idea of “plausibility structures” being a significant part of our postmodern American culture.

A plausibility structure is a widely held view about something that is believed to be true. What is plausible or most likely to be accurate? The challenge is that there are times when some of these ideas may not be factually true. People will often accept certain concepts without actually investigating them. This establishes an unquestioned belief system. By challenging some of these beliefs, we may be helping someone to find or to rethink aspects of what is really true.

A good example of an errant plausibility structure is that humanity is the result of evolution from some original simple single-cell lifeform that came from some “goo” in a pond struck by lightning.

If you look at the mathematical probability that all of the complexity of instructional information systems found in DNA, how multiple body systems work together, and symbiotic environmental interconnection of animals and plants all occurring simultaneously by chance or necessity alone without a Creator, that probability number is zero, without a doubt.

So why do people believe that the “Goo” man is the most likely explanation for the origin of life? I believe the reason is partly due to the thought that science can explain everything so that we don’t need a creator in order to explain origins. The idea that life started out simple with single cell organisms and progressed in complexity is considered to be bedrock truth for much of our society today.

There is a glaring error in this concept that I would like to make you all aware of. Single cell organisms are not simple at all. The level of complexity of an inanimate object such as a rock compared to a living tiny single cell creature is so great that it can’t even be realistically compared at all. The mechanisms required for a single cell organism to survive are off the charts crazily complex!! The scientific community (scientism religion) really does not want people to know this information, because it makes the idea of belief in a Creator God a much more likely plausibility structure.

The reality is that the more that we know scientifically, it reveals that there is so much more that we don’t know about how these things came into being to exist.

So the complaint that this argument is just using God in the gaps. is not valid. (God in the Gaps means that you use the argument that everything that we don’t know the answer to is credited to God based on the absence of knowledge.) The realization that God has created these incredibly complex systems is not based on lack of information, rather it is the result of seeing that the most likely explanation is that the Creator of life did just that, create.

Things just don’t pop into existence by themselves. A clay pot requires a creator. The universe requires a Creator. The big bang requires a Big Banger. The origin of the universe was a Supernatural event. There is no adequate naturalistic explanation alone that is logically satisfactory to answer the question.

I have two excellent videos for you to watch. The first one is very short, only 3 minutes, showing the amazing intricacy of the molecular powerhouse properties of ATP synthase which acts a bit like a cell phone battery and is required for all life forms to function. The second video is longer, but well worth viewing showing the incredible complexity found in DNA.
